1965 GTO This car started out life as a reef turquoise 389, 4-BBL, 2-speed automatic. When I bought it, the car had a low-performance ’72 Pontiac 350, T400, 4-wheel discs, and a 4.10 Posi in a 12-bolt….and the car was jacked up in the front , was very red, and needed a lot of body work since it had gone through many winters in the great white north. I bought the car in ’94, cleaned it up a little, drove it down from the Chicago area to the POCI National Car Show in Springfield, IL, where I put it only in the display class (I had a 455 that my uncle was getting rid of in my trunk!). After the show, I drove it back to Utah, where I was stationed at the time. I will NEVER drive a car with 4.10 gears cross-country again (unless it has a huge overdrive)! Over the years I fiddled with it, bought parts, had the 455 built, then I realized I would need a professional to actually do the car right. So I sold my ’70 GTO to a guy in Austin, Arkansas and took the 65 to Reflections Auto in Cabot. They had a good rep for quality work, but unfortunately, they didn’t do much of that on my car – they just spent a lot of time going in circles and charging me for it. After having it for over two years and with no end of time or money in sight, I pulled it out and hauled it up to a guy that knows Pontiacs. You can see the results. What you can’t see is all the stuff he had to fix that Reflections screwed up. Whatever you do, don’t take your car to Reflections. Enough history, now for the details:
  • Dodge Viper Midnight Blue Metallic Pearl (close to Nightwatch Blue, but better in my opinion.)
  • .030 over 455 with stock crank and 2-bolt mains.
  • Forged J.E. pistons and Eagle H-beam rods.
  • Edelbrock Aluminum Heads
  • Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
  • Edelbrock 850 CFM Quadrajet
  • 1.65 Harland Sharpe roller rockers
  • Moderate Hydraulic cam/lifters from Butler (forgot specs its been so long)
  • Mallory Unilite distributor
  • RA IV style exhaust manifolds
  • Vintage-Air air conditioning, modified with some stock pieces for a neat fit
  • Griffin aluminum radiator
  • Frame was powder-coated
  • Hotchkis lowered springs
  • Hotchkis tubular A-arms
  • T/A steering box
  • 12-bolt narrowed to stock ’65 width, c-clip eliminators, currently 3.08 open rear (the other one blew to pieces after 7 miles, thanks Reflections!)
  • Richmond 6-Speed Manual Transmission
  • Weld Rodlite Wheels
  • 15x7 front, 15x8 rear (not shown) with (smaller) BFG Rubber
  • Custom stitched cloth/vinyl interior by Acey’s Upholstery of Little Rock(they did an excellent job)
  • Ralley gauges, wood wheel, no stereo yet
  • There are still some bugs to work out and a few things to finish, but it runs and drives and if I can work out those bugs, I’ll try to bring it to a club event sometime to show it off. If I can’t, you can join us at the POCI Nats next year in Joplin MO – just a few miles up the road from Little Rock!
